From November 4 to 15, 2019, the Regional Training Program on Postharvest Management System in Fresh Horticultural Produce was organized at Mekong Institute in Khon Kaen, Thailand. There were 21 participants from Cambodia, PR China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam which are located in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS). As participants, Yu Lijuan from Agricultural products processing research institute YAAS and Dong Wei from the Institute of Food Crop YAAS attended this training.

Fruit and vegetables have played a significant role in supporting increased incomes and the resiliency of smallholder farms in the GMS. But fruit and vegetable production is severely constrained by postharvest losses. These losses amount to an enormous economic loss in terms of wasted resources, inputs used in production, foregone sales and profits, foregone food to feed and nourish the growing population. Several technological and organizational interventions have been developed to contain the problem of postharvest losses of fruit and vegetables. Promoting postharvest technologies will increase employment, enhance the rural economy, and stimulate economic growth and sustainability across GMS. Therefore, during this training, the experience on postharvest losses and management of fresh horticultural produce was exchanged between each participating country and region. And, rich content was introduced in the training program, including the importance of postharvest handling and management, an overview on the postharvest losses in developed and developing countries, pre-harvest and harvest factors affecting postharvest quality, and so on.

By attending this train, Yu Lijuan and Dong Wei were enhanced to appreciate the importance of postharvest handling and management in maintaining the quality and reducing the postharvest losses in fresh horticultural produce. But also the knowledge and experience on postharvest handling and management from this training will be applied in the future work to promote reducing the postharvest loss, keeping quality and quantity of fresh horticultural produce in Yunnan province.
